Another product out there is borate treated wood.  It is "environmentally friendly" and it can be used in most construction applications.

I still advocate using a wood that is naturally going to have all the qualities of treated wood.   FSC Redwood and cedar and the tropical hardwoods are all good choices - plus they are more attractive.
