Big Green: Carbon footprint of renovation v. new construction

Hello Big Greeners:

I am looking for papers, articles, and/or case studies on the LCA of renovating existing buildings versus new construction. Specifically, has anyone shown the carbon-intensity of renovation to be less-than, greater-than, or equal-to that of new construction? Articles/papers would preferably be peer reviewed, or at least include reproducible data/calculations, as opposed to simply relying on reason, deduction, and/or intuition. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
