Big Green: Phase Converters

This is a follow-up to my post about single-phase vs three-phase equipment.
It turns out that we have only single-phase to this rather remote site. Now
the question is -- does anyone know of an efficient phase converter?
Apparently, they are inherently not efficient because they have idle
current, which uses power whether the load is running or not. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated.
