Big Green: IAQ in underground parking garages

Dear Ralph:
Interesting thing to note about underground parking garages.
Sometimes monitoring and control using the detection of carbon monoxide is used for demand controlled ventilation to balance the indoor air quality with the energy use.
Unfortunately, relying just on carbon monoxide fails to dilute and remove the other air contaminants from motor vehicles (e.g., unburned hydrocarbons, aldehydes, etc.), but the simultaneous monitoring for both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide can be used to provide a healthier indoor environment by being responsive to the presence of all of the cars, as opposed to just those without a properly functioning catalytic converter that is converting the carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.
Sincerely,
David
