Big Green: pioneers of green building--who are they?

Ditto to all Stephen mentioned all are stars in my mind (I do not know Pam
Lippe but have heard of her). I would add:

VIVIAN LOFTNESS. I first saw Vivian speak about 1980 or 1981 about green
building before it was called green building. Vivian went on to promote
green building at the AIA, led AIA research in high performance building (in
the 90's?) was Chancellor, Chair or President of the Architecture Dept at
Carnegie Melon U., started and operated the Carnegie Mellon University,
Center for Bldg. Perf. and last I knew was also a professor at Carnegie
Melon, plus much more.

Professor Loftness has made major contributions to the definition of total
building performance for a range of building types - museums, research
laboratories, courthouses, and offices. Her research advances the
understanding of spatial quality, thermal, visual, acoustic and air quality
as well as long term building integrity, through effective architectural
decisionmaking, systems integration, and improvements in the building
delivery process. These emphases have led to major research projects on
defining the fundamental qualities of building performance, on enhancing the
building delivery process for performance, and on critical design
decisionmaking for a number of building occupancy types.

DOUGLAS BALCOMB performed groundbreaking research on passive solar design at
Los Alamos National Laboratory and the National Renewable Energy Lab (that
made it possible for the also the illustrious Ed Mazria to gather the info
needed for the seminal Passive Solar Design Handbook).

The American Solar Energy Society Fellow

ASES selected NREL's Doug Balcomb, who has specialized in passive solar
systems for over 25 years, as Fellow of the Society in acknowledgement of
his contribution to ASES and to the solar energy field.

NREL Fellowship

NREL selected Doug Balcomb, who has been at NREL since 1987, as a research
fellow for his outstanding work in passive solar design. Balcomb is
internationally recognized as a pioneer in passive solar building design.

Cheers,

Ralph

Hello All,

It seems like all the heroes are men. So let's not forget about all the
woman that made this happen.

Christine Ervin --- past CEO & Pres USGBC and who in the early years gave
enormous credibility to the Council having been Assistant Administrator at
the US Dept of Energy.

Sandy Mendler --- led HOKs sustainability initiative

Gail Vittori & Robin Guenther --- pioneers especially for green building in
healthcare

Rebecca Flora --- Pittsburgh was doing green buildings before there was a
USGBC

Lynne Barker --- Lynne was on the board of the USGBC during the mid and late
90's and I attribute the reason we now have local chapters of the Council to
her instance.

Hillary Brown --- was at the NY City Dept of Design and Construction and was
one of the earliest public promoters of Green buildings.

Pam Lippe --- pioneered green in New York City working on some of the most
influential green building projects, as well as championing Earth Day
activities around the country.

And my votes for guys.

Bob Berkebile --- having founded AIA COTE, he was instrumental in getting
the architects to support Green Buildings.

Rob Watson --- chaired the LEED Steering Committee

Bill McDonough

Alex Wilson and Nadav Malin --- their publications (Environmental Building
News) really helped pave the way to make product selection easy.

Nigel Howard --- was brought over by the USGBC from the UK where he had
helped to develop BREEAM. Nigel was an enormous asset to the development of
LEED.

Paul von Paumgartten --- early board member and strong proponent both of
energy efficiency in green buildings, but was also instrumental in launching
LEED for Existing Buildings.

Boy, this feels like a tricky topic to jump in on--how to choose who to
mention?

So rather than try anything comprehensive, I'll just mention the person who
has had the biggest influence by far on my career in green building: Gail
Lindsey. I blogged
<http://www.buildinggreen.com/live/index.cfm/2007/11/13/Community-Leader-Gai
l-Lindsey> about her a while back.

Also, just for the record, I'll correct a few details in the list below:

Paul Hawken (not Hawkins)

Sandy Wiggins was not a founder of USGBC (that would be David Gottfried,
along with Mike Italiano and Rick Fedrizzi). But he is the immediate past
chair, and a very enlightened developer.

Also, there is no "USGBC Canada". There is a Canada GBC, which is
independent of USGBC, and licenses the right to use LEED. Peter Busby was
instrumental in creating the Canada GBC. Kevin Hydes was chair of USGBC
before Sandy, even though he's Canadian.

Ed Mazria

What a fun question!
