Good question - no easy answer. It would make for a good article. A few
quick points:
* Architecture 2030 is driving focus on the issue that not all metrics are
created equal and wouldn¹t it be great if we all spoke the same language.
* EPA Energy Star Target Finder uses CBECS (basically an actual energy use
census). Its sometimes difficult to match your building to a building type
in Target Finder. Sometimes you just don¹t fit the mold and EPA does not
have the resources (yet) to add all the building types for which they have
data.
* Architecture 2030 is aligned with Energy Star Target Finder and attempts
to fill in the building type gaps on their web site.
* Have not used GreenGlobes, but my understanding is you can qualify using
Energy Star.
* ASHRAE and LEED NC are predictors and began without a consistent means of
incorporating ³plug loads² into modeling. Perhaps this is an over
simplification, but to me this kept the door open for incorporation of a
³fudge factor² in energy modeling.
My non engineer two cents, but you¹ve hit on a critical issue and why recent
ASHRAE events are so disconcerting. Last point, and from what I¹ve heard,
think Mr. Mazria would agree. Most architect¹s eyes glaze over when you
start talking kbtu¹s/sf etc. The metrics need to be simple and consistent.
