Big Green: Thermal value Vegetated Roofs

Hi Charles,
Hope you're doing well. I'm in Raleigh next week and can touch base again
if you'd like. We just manufactured a roof panel for northern Ontario -
above arctic circle - that will perform at better than R60 and is only 8.5"
thick (takes advantage of the inverse relationship between polyurethane K
factor (1/R) & temp) and could support a vegetative roof in any environment.
I've also shot a note to one of my friends on the ASHRAE code council and
asked for his input.
Regards,
Charles Leahy

I doubt you will find prescriptive values as it would vary from extensive to
intensive type roofs as well as soil mix design and local precip./
saturation requirements and drainage, etc... - Dr. Karen Liu at the NRC in
Canada has been working for the last decade on green roof research so would
be the source. Here is a link to an old article
http://www.eltgreenroofs.com/pdf/ELT-NRCC45345.pdf
You could design a roof and assign values based on the material properties
(design mix) and assume values for saturation including potential snow
coverage (very insulating). I've done this before and it's a piece of work.

Pardon if duplicated - had two addresses for the list - hope this one's
right.
Anyone run across recent research on green roof R-values. Needs to be peer
reviewed / scientific enough for ASHRAE to include as a prescriptive
allowance in energy code. My own tests are anecdotal at best.
Thanks, Charles
